OLD MASTERS CONTINUE TO BREAK ART RECORDS |
On 8-9 July 2008, Christie’s and Sotheby’s held their auctions of Old Masters’ paintings. Sotheby’s did particularly well, achieving their second highest Old Masters sales total.
A report by Artprice.com indicates that Sotheby’s achieved 19 records for renowned artists such as Jan I Breughel, Jacopo Tintoretto and Guido Reni.
Several lost works were sold at Christie’s, including “Bajan Riñendo” by Goya (last known in 1877) and “La Surprise” by Watteau (last known in 1848). Both pieces achieved record prices: £2 million is a record for a Goya ink drawing on paper, while £11 million is a record for any work by Watteau. Watteau’s record-breaking, long-lost painting was exported to the USA for display, before being re-imported to the UK for auction.
