HMRC'S CHANGES TO UK VAT RETURN PROCESSING |
In VAT Notes No. 3, HMRC summarised two new measures to streamline their processing of VAT returns.
1. Withdrawal of pre-paid envelopes:
On 1 October 2008, HMRC is withdrawing pre-paid business reply envelopes that are sent with the VAT return. Reply envelopes will still be provided but you should remember to affix a stamp.
2. VAT return – new processing arrangements:
The way HMRC processes a completed VAT return changed on 1 September 2008. From this date, the figures entered in each box on a VAT return will be scanned. To assist accurate scanning, HMRC reminds taxpayers to write figures clearly in the boxes provided and to use black ink.
The most important of these changes, in the short term, is to get used to putting stamps on the self-addressed envelopes that HMRC send to you. But the most important issue, in the long term, is to recognise that HMRC is building up to automated VAT return processing (eventually leading to on-line VAT returns).
